BM100 Introduction to Business 3 Credits
  This course is an introduction to business administration and management, marketing, finance, human resources, and economics in the American market place. Aspects of business, including the relationship of business to the social, economic, and political worlds will be covered. The history of the American economy, and a comparison of the free enterprise system to other economic systems, will be discussed.
   
BM110 Business Management 3 Credits
  The processes of management, decision-making, and organizational structure will be reviewed, including discussion of employer-employee relations, and managerial functions in businesses.
   
BM120 Fundamentals of Marketing 3 Credits
  This course will examine the procedures involved in the distribution of goods and services to consumers and industrial users. Marketing institutions (wholesale and retail), and the role of the manufacturer in determining distribution channels and formulating marketing policies will be studied. The role of government, the advent of the global economy, and the effect of consumerism on marketing practices will be discussed.
   
BM130 Principles of Salesmanship 3 Credits
  Professional, industrial, and retail selling theories and practices will be presented and analyzed. The theory and practice of consumer-centered selling, including techniques for handling objections, demonstrating merchandise, and closing sales, will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on career-building and leadership aspects of selling. Students will have opportunities to practice sales presentations.
   
BM140 Small Business Management 3 Credits
  Students will be introduced to small business enterprises, their
organization, operation, and management. Emphasis will be
placed on problem solving in the areas of location, organization,
operation, and management. Additional topics will include legal
requirements, employee-management relations, and the relationship between government and small businesses.
   
BM150 Sales Psychology 3 Credits
  Students will develop marketing skills through an understanding of principles of human relations and psychology applicable to the selling process. Consumer behavior including need determination, decision-making, and product/service evaluation will be studied. Marketing strategies, such as consumer segmentation, product positioning, and advertising techniques, will be discussed.
   
BM160 Essentials of Advertising 3 Credits
  This course is a survey of the principles and practice of advertising. Topics will include the organization of advertising agencies and departments, selection of media, and evaluation of copy and format.
   
BM170 Management in the Hotel and Hospitality Industry 3 Credits
  The course is designed to provide students with a strong understanding of the hotel and hospitality industry. Major emphasis will be placed on hotel management, food services management, and party planning. Management skills in the travel and tourism industry will also be strongly emphasized.
   
BM180 Human Resources Management 3 Credits
  This course examines how firms gain sustainable competitive advantage with and through people. It will enable the student to comprehend the concept of globalization and the impact it has created in human resources management. This awareness will provide perspective with which to interpret current practices, problems, and issues more clearly. The course also discusses the challenges of human resources management that will be encountered in the work environment.
   
BM181 Fundamentals of Purchasing 3 Credits
 

Prerequisite: BM170

Fundamental principles and purchasing techniques will be studied with a greater emphasis on product information needed to purchase in a specific field. Areas of concentration include purchasing of vegetables, poultry, beef, fish, and alcoholic beverages.

   
BM182 Food and Beverage Operations 3 Credits
  Prerequisite: BM170

Analysis of labor-management relations in the hospitality industry
through historical reference, case studies and on-the-job
incidents. Includes material on contract provisions, negotiations
and interpretation.

BM290 Business Communication 3 Credits
 

Prerequisite: EN100

This course presents the principles and practices of written and verbal business communication. Emphasis is on the mastery of professional language and the application of logic to syntactic structures. Research and analysis of various business situations will provide students with the opportunity to practice effective business communication techniques. Students will prepare business correspondence and oral presentations.

   
BM296 Business Internship I 3 Credits
 

135 Class Hours

The internship offers students an opportunity to include professional work experience in their program of study. A minimum of 135 hours must be spent on an internship assignment. Periodic meetings with a faculty advisor are required.
