New Pragmatism in Graphic Design

In 2003, BramsonORT started a Graphic Design program that is rapidly gaining popularity among students. This intensive program taught by professor Bentsion Janashvili gives the students skills required in the fast growing design and advertising industries.


Professor Janashvili emphasizes that his program not only helps students cultivate graphic and web design skills, but it also leads them to think as marketing professionals. “Studying design from a marketing standpoint gives our students a strong sense of direction and pragmatism,” said Mr. Janashvili. “These are essential qualities in today's results-oriented corporate culture.” Some BramsonORT students take graphic and web design courses in conjunction with the Visual Communications course, also taught by Professor Janashvili. Together, these courses cover both the theoretical foundations of design as well as the discipline’s practical applications to particular products and services.

The graphic design program begins with a full introduction to the history of design and typography and then focuses on elements of design such as layout, choice of colors, resolution. Bramson ORT provides the latest textbooks and software as well as a state-of-the-art Mac environment to enable students create exciting designs from start to finish.

Throughout the course, students create diverse designs for traditional and digital media. Their projects include newspaper and magazine ads, catalogs and brochures, business cards and other corporate-identity materials. Many hours are dedicated to interactive marketing. "Web and print graphics require different approaches to both design and content" says Mr. Janashvili. As part of their field experience, students visit print shops to learn about the numerous technical challenges that stand between their design and the finished printed work.

Mr. Janashvili brings to the classroom many years of graphic and web design experience. Having worked for large corporations and his own design firm – GraphicIQ - Mr. Janashvili gives his students the knowledge and confidence they need to find their place in the fast-growing design world.
